Annotations

Annotations let you add notes to your timeline — deployments, campaigns, product launches, or any event that might affect your traffic. They appear as markers on the overview chart, making it easy to correlate traffic changes with real-world events.

Creating an Annotation

  1. Open your site dashboard
  2. Click on the overview chart at the date you want to annotate
  3. Click Add Annotation
  4. Enter a short description (e.g., "Launched v2.0", "Black Friday campaign started", "Featured on Hacker News")
  5. Click Save

You can also create annotations from Settings → Annotations.

Viewing Annotations

Annotations appear as small markers on the overview timeseries chart. Hover over a marker to see the annotation text and date.

When viewing a date range that includes annotations, you'll see all relevant markers. This helps you understand why traffic spiked or dropped on specific days.

Common Use Cases

  • Deployments — mark releases to correlate with traffic or conversion changes
  • Marketing campaigns — mark campaign start/end dates
  • Product launches — note major feature releases
  • Content publishing — mark blog post or video publication dates
  • External events — note conference talks, press mentions, or social media features
  • Incidents — mark downtime or outages that affected tracking

Managing Annotations

Edit or delete annotations from Settings → Annotations:

  • Edit — change the description or date
  • Delete — remove the annotation from the chart

All team members with Editor or Owner roles can create and manage annotations.

Tips

  • Keep descriptions short (under 50 characters) so they're readable on hover
  • Add annotations immediately when events happen — it's easy to forget later
  • Use annotations to build a historical record of what drove traffic changes
