Geographic Analytics
The Locations section shows you where your visitors are located geographically, helping you understand your audience distribution and optimize for different markets.
Country-Level Analyticsβ
By default, Ovyxa displays visitor data at the country level. The Countries table shows:
- Country - Full country name with flag emoji (e.g., π«π· France, πΊπΈ United States)
- Unique Visitors - How many distinct visitors from this country
- Percentage - Share of total traffic from this country
The system recognizes and displays data for 240+ countries and territories worldwide.
How Location is Determinedβ
Ovyxa determines visitor location using IP-based geolocation:
- When a visitor accesses your site, their IP address is processed in real-time
- The IP is matched against a geolocation database to determine the country
- The country code is stored with the event
- The IP address itself is never stored - only the derived country information
This approach respects privacy while providing useful geographic insights. The IP is used only in memory for geolocation and rate limiting, then immediately discarded.
Privacy-First Approachβ
What we collect:
- Country, region, and city-level location (derived from IP)
- No precise coordinates
What we don't collect:
- IP addresses (not stored)
- Precise location data
- Street-level accuracy
- GPS coordinates
This ensures compliance with privacy regulations while still giving you actionable geographic insights.
Click-to-Filterβ
Click any country in the table to filter your entire dashboard to visitors from that location. This lets you answer questions like:
- What pages do French visitors view most? - Filter France, then check Top Pages
- Which sources drive traffic from Germany? - Filter Germany, then check Traffic Sources
- What devices do UK visitors use? - Filter United Kingdom, then check Devices
Active location filters appear as chips at the top of your dashboard. Click the X to remove them.
Use Casesβ
Localize Your Contentβ
If you see significant traffic from specific countries, consider:
- Translating content into those languages
- Creating region-specific landing pages
- Adjusting pricing for different markets
- Highlighting region-relevant examples
Example: You notice 30% of traffic comes from Germany but your site is English-only. Creating German versions of your top pages could significantly improve engagement.
Optimize for Time Zonesβ
Understanding where your visitors are helps you:
- Schedule content releases when your audience is online
- Time email campaigns for optimal open rates
- Plan live events for appropriate time zones
Example: If most visitors are from US time zones, launch new features at 9 AM Eastern rather than midnight UTC.
Identify Market Opportunitiesβ
Geographic data reveals growth opportunities:
- Unexpected traffic from new markets might indicate demand
- Growing traffic from specific regions suggests marketing success
- Declining traffic from certain countries might need investigation
Example: You're a European SaaS company and notice increasing traffic from Brazil. This could signal opportunity to create Portuguese content or hire Portuguese-speaking support.
Measure Regional Campaign Performanceβ
Tag regional campaigns with UTM parameters and filter by country:
utm_campaign=nordics-launch&utm_source=linkedin
Then filter to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland individually to see which country responded best.
Regional & City Drill-Downβ
Ovyxa supports full geographic drill-down:
Countries β Regions β Cities
Click any country to see its regions, then click a region to see cities. This allows you to:
- See which US states or French regions drive traffic
- Identify city-level opportunities (e.g., "70% of Canadian traffic is from Toronto")
- Target local marketing more effectively
City-level geolocation uses the MaxMind GeoIP database. Accuracy varies by region but is typically within 50km for most locations.
Understanding the Dataβ
Normal Distribution Patternsβ
Expect to see:
- Long tail - A few countries dominate, many contribute small amounts
- Concentration - Often 80% of traffic comes from 3-5 countries
- Language correlation - Countries sharing your site's language typically rank highest
Anomaly Detectionβ
Watch for unusual patterns:
- Sudden spikes from unexpected countries - Could indicate bot traffic or viral content
- Geographic clustering - Many visitors from unusual locations might suggest proxy/VPN use
- Zero traffic from expected markets - Might indicate technical issues or geo-blocking problems
Combining with Other Metricsβ
Location + Deviceβ
Filter by a country, then check Devices to see:
- Do mobile usage rates differ by country?
- Are certain countries predominantly desktop users?
Example: Indian traffic might be 85% mobile, while German traffic is 60% desktop - this affects responsive design priorities.
Location + Sourcesβ
Filter by country, then check Traffic Sources:
- Which marketing channels work in different regions?
- Do social platforms vary by country (WeChat in China vs. Facebook elsewhere)?
Location + Pagesβ
Filter by country, then check Top Pages:
- What content resonates in different markets?
- Do product pages outperform blog posts in certain countries?
Tips & Best Practicesβ
-
Monitor top 5 countries weekly - Track trends in your core markets
-
Investigate unexpected traffic - New countries appearing in your top 10 might reveal opportunities or problems
-
Compare bounce rates by country - Filter by country and check metrics to see if certain markets engage differently
-
Set up country-specific goals - Use UTM parameters and location filters to measure regional conversion rates
-
Consider VPN usage - Some visitors use VPNs, which may show them in different countries than their actual location
-
Test international payment methods - If you see traffic from countries but no conversions, payment method availability might be an issue
The Locations section helps you understand your global reach and optimize your site for the markets that matter most to your business. Use it to inform localization decisions, marketing strategies, and expansion plans.
